Dr. Joel E. Mata received his primary medical education at Stanford University Medical School. After completing his primary medical school training, he successfully completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Stanford and was accepted into their pain management fellowship-training program. After successfully completing the one-year fellowship he was asked to stay as both a clinician and educator at Stanford.
Dr. Mata moved to San Diego in the summer of 2007 where he developed and became the medical director for the areas first comprehensive Functional Restoration Program. The program quickly became known for its “difficult to treat” workers compensation patient success stories and continues to thrive to this day.
Dr. Mata began transitioning his clinical role late in 2010 to working with Workers Compensation Insurance Carriers, first as a utilization review doctor, then as a specialty reviewing physician for EK Health Next Step Program and currently as a Medical Director for an early intervention physician case management program for CorVel. Dr. Mata has been working with the staff in an effort to improve case management strategies and thereby optimize medication regimens and over measures of function in patients with chronic pain.
Dr. Mata also is the Chief Clinical Officer for American Pain Solutions where he is helping to develop pain management Functional Restoration Programs in Arizona, California and Maryland. His clinical practice is based out of San Diego.
